Tour Description

This private tour provides a guided kayaking experience on the Heinaberg Glacier Lagoon, located in Southeast Iceland within Vatnajökull National Park. Heinaberg is less visited than other lagoons, offering a quiet environment for those who prefer to avoid large groups. This tour is ideal for travelers staying near the town of Höfn, which is approximately 45 kilometers (30 minutes) to the east.

The tour uses sit-on-top kayaks, which are selected for their high stability. These boats are suitable for beginners and do not require previous paddling experience. Because this is a private tour, the pace is adjusted to your comfort level. You will spend your time navigating the calm, freshwater lagoon, moving between icebergs that have broken off from the glacier.

All participants are provided with specialized dry gear and life vests to ensure warmth and safety on the water. While kayaking is a light physical activity, it is accessible to most people in good health. Your private guide will provide a safety briefing and basic paddling instructions before you leave the shore.

Unlike motorized boat tours, kayaking allows you to get closer to the ice formations without disturbing the environment. You will see the sheer scale of the glacier fronts and the rugged mountains of the Icelandic highlands from a water-level perspective. This tour focuses on factual information about the local geology and the movement of the Vatnajökull glacier, providing a practical and educational way to see Iceland’s ice cap.

Yes, you are welcome to join. Participation is entirely at your own discretion, as we do not have a ban for pregnant women.

Please note that while the activity requires minimal effort on a clear, sunny day, it can become significantly more physically demanding during bad weather (such as rain or strong winds). We recommend evaluating your personal physical abilities and consulting your doctor before booking.

  • Participants must have basic swimming skills.
  • For safety and equipment reasons, the tour has weight and sizing restrictions (equipment accommodates guests up to 120 kg). Oversized people can expect having problems fitting our suits. Our biggest suits are the size of XXL.
  • For safety, stability, and ease of handling, our tours primarily use tandem SIT kayaks (boats designed for two people). Single SIT kayaks are only utilized to accommodate single travelers or groups with an odd number of bookings. When booking, you select the number of participants, not the specific type of kayak. The guide will determine and allocate the kayak type (single or tandem) on location, based on the group configuration, and this cannot be requested in advance.

All-day tours can be cancelled up to 24 hours from the departure time by sending a written email to info@troll.is. You will receive a full refund except the 3% card fee. All changes and cancellations requested less than 24 hours from the departure time are non refundable. In the case of cancellation of the tour by the operator because of extreme weather, road conditions, or other factors, we will assist you with rebooking to another date or booking other activities when possible or provide a full refund.
