Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Kayak Tour - Private Group
Tour Description
This private kayaking tour offers a direct way to experience the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Southeast Iceland. Located within Vatnajökull National Park, this lagoon is famous for its large icebergs that break off from the glacier and float toward the Atlantic Ocean. By choosing a private tour, your group receives a tailored experience with a professional guide, ensuring a steady pace and more time for photography and observation.
The tour departs from a base camp located at the Jökulsárlón parking lot (GPS: 64.048096, -16.178778). This location is roughly 380 kilometers (5 hours of driving) from Reykjavík, so it is best suited for those staying in the nearby towns of Höfn or Vík.
Upon arrival, you will be equipped with all necessary safety gear. We use sit-on-top kayaks, which are designed for maximum stability. Unlike traditional kayaks, these are very difficult to flip, making them ideal for beginners or those who feel nervous on the water.
During the excursion, you will glide across the calm water to see icebergs that are often inaccessible to larger motorized boats. Your guide will explain how the glacier is formed and how the lagoon's landscape changes daily. This activity is focused on a quiet, respectful approach to nature, allowing you to hear the sounds of shifting ice and local birdlife without the distraction of crowds.

Please meet us directly at our small box van, marked "Iceguide," located in the main Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon parking lot (GPS Coordinates: 64.048096, -16.178778). This is where you will receive all necessary equipment and suit up before heading onto the water.
You must arrive at the base camp at least 20 minutes prior to the departure time for gearing up and a mandatory safety briefing.
Due to heavy visitor traffic, especially during peak season, travelers should plan to arrive at the parking lot 40–50 minutes early to secure parking.
Due to strict tour schedules, late arrivals will unfortunately result in the cancellation and full forfeiture of your booking fee.
- Participants must have basic swimming skills.
- For safety and equipment reasons, the tour has weight and sizing restrictions (equipment accommodates guests up to 120 kg). Oversized people can expect having problems fitting our suits. Our biggest suits are the size of XXL.
- For safety, stability, and ease of handling, our tours primarily use tandem SIT kayaks (boats designed for two people). Single SIT kayaks are only utilized to accommodate single travelers or groups with an odd number of bookings. When booking, you select the number of participants, not the specific type of kayak. The guide will determine and allocate the kayak type (single or tandem) on location, based on the group configuration, and this cannot be requested in advance.
Yes, you are welcome to join. Participation is entirely at your own discretion, as we do not have a ban for pregnant women.
Please note that while the activity requires minimal effort on a clear, sunny day, it can become significantly more physically demanding during bad weather (such as rain or strong winds). We recommend evaluating your personal physical abilities and consulting your doctor before booking.
