Blue Ice Cave & Glacier Hike
Skaftafell
General Information
Availability: October - April
Join us for an unforgettable glacier hike and ice cave exploration on one of Vatnajökull’s stunning outlet glaciers. This tour combines glacier walking with the rare opportunity to step inside a naturally formed ice cave—known for its striking blue tones and sculpted walls.
Led by a certified guide, you’ll explore the frozen landscape of Europe’s largest glacier, encountering different ice formations along the way.
Perfect for those looking to combine adventure and scenery, this tour offers a unique glimpse into Iceland’s glacial world.
The tour begins at Hof, where you'll meet your glacier guide 20 minutes before departure. After a short briefing, you'll be fitted with all the necessary gear – crampons, helmet, ice axe—before heading toward the glacier.
A 20-minute walk brings you to the edge of Falljökull, one of the most visually striking outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull. Along the way, your guide will point out visible signs of glacial retreat, including exposed bedrock, moss lines, and a meltwater lagoon.
Once on the ice, you'll learn how to walk safely with crampons before starting your guided hike. During the tour, you’ll explore impressive ice formations and the unique terrain of the glacier. A highlight of the tour is the visit to a natural ice cave—an incredible opportunity to step inside and experience the deep blue ice from within, offering a rare view into the glacier's constantly evolving structure.
What to wear
Weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. For tours during winter: warm clothing as first layer, waterproof outdoor jacket and pants, hiking boots with high ankle protection, a hat and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket and pants is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for outdoor trips as they become very heavy and cold when they get wet.
